Key Stage 4 English

English Language at KS4

Our KS4 students study the AQA English Language 9-1 qualification. Exploring topics from: the monarchy, science & creation and parenthood; to power & conflict, social class and friendship. We teach objective led lessons that encourage independence, resilience and will improve a student’s ability to write, read, speak and listen. A good grade in English is a mandatory requirement for a host of jobs and courses. Our chief priority at Key Stage 4 is to do everything in our power to help your child achieve and exceed their target grade.

English Literature at KS4

Our KS4 students study the AQA English Literature 9-1 qualification. It is important to note that the specification is 100% exam based and both exams are closed book; therefore students need to know the novel / play / poem studied exceptionally well. The English team are passionate about Literature and endeavour to pass this on to our students – there is nothing like a good book.

In the final term of Year 9, students start their KS4 courses.  KS4 texts and units for literature include:

  • ‘Macbeth’
  • A Christmas Carol
  • ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’
  • Poetry both pre and post 19th Century
  • Blood Brothers
  • An Inspector Calls

Our chief priority at Key Stage 4 language and literature is to do everything in our power to help your child achieve and exceed their target grade.

Media Studies at KS4

Students in Year 9 have the opportunity to choose to study for a GCSE in Media Studies. This subject provides students with an excellent insight into the world of mass communication.  Through the course (examination board Eduqas), we study everything from the language control of advertising to the cinematography of creating a blockbuster, from understanding audience theories to reinterpreting news programmes for a new generation.
The course combines researching and reviewing existing projects and then focuses on the creative elements of media through the design and production of such items as DVD covers, music videos, film posters, magazines and websites.

Case studies include:

  • Taylor Swift's 'Bad Blood'
  • Duran Duran's 'Rio'
  • 'Pokemon Go'
  • 1950's Quality Street advert
  • 'This Girl Can' advertising campaign
  • 'The Archers'
  • 'Luther'
  • 'The Sweeney'

This very practical, yet academic, GCSE provides an insight into a vast new network of jobs and also develops the analytical, research and teamwork skills required to provide all students with a sure footing into further study.
