KS3 HOME ECONOMICS
FOOD
As students have had many different life experiences with food before they start KS3 education, we strive to teach them the basics that they will need to make the right choices about food.
We first teach the students about health, safety and hygiene as this is the foundation of all food work.
They will learn different ways to prepare, combine, mix, heat and store ingredients correctly.
We aim to teach a variety of skills to a good level and want the students to experience using a selection of equipment correctly.
We encourage students to try different foods and evaluate them through sensory analysis.
Our course also involves student learning about good nutrition and portion control.
We aim for our students to leave school to be able to choose and cook dishes independently preparing them for adult life.
KS4 CATERING
The hospitality and Catering industry is huge with a wide variety of establishments to work in and over a 100 jobs to choose from. A course in hospitality offers a unique opportunity to develop knowledge and to extend your skills within the industry. It gives students the capacity to work both independently and in a team, and also develop your creativity and imaginative thinking.
The course also encourages investigations and studies within a variety of contexts.
The emphasis is on more complicated practical work and the ability to plan and evaluate in detail. Students are taught how to plan and sequence dishes and how to develop menus for the different establishment but always encouraging taking the healthy option.
Students need to be able to demonstrate knowledge of products and services, the range of customer groups they may have to interact with, and the range of large equipment they may encounter in a commercial kitchen.
