Thurs – New York sights by day

There were a few bleary eyes this morning. A quick breakfast, coach loaded and then the group were off for the Manhattan boat cruise. The sun was out yet it was chilly out on the water. The views were fantastic, and the wonders of New York and it’s boroughs was put in perspective. Real excitement and many photos were taken on the approach to the Statue of Liberty as you would expect, then most retreated to the relative warm of the cabin. Once on shore we were coached to downtown where lunch was taken alfresco in Bowling Green Park by the harbour side following purchases in a traditional NY deli. After lunch the group walked to Ground Zero and saw the memorial to the NY fire fighters. They then walked around the new under construction World Trade Centre (Freedom Tower). Then onto the financial district and down Wall Street for more memorable sights and photos and finally onto Pier 17 Plaza for their last shopping fix, branded clothing in particular.

We are presently on the coach to JFK for our 9pm flight. Many are snoozing after their full on NY experience.

We hope this blog has been enjoyable and of use. You will be able to track the progress of our return flight (no. DL 005) and we will call the phone chain with an update once we have cleared customs at Heathrow. We hope that the Easter Holiday get away will not delay our ETA of 1:30pm at Bournemouth.

Wed night update – New York night experience

Awesome night had by all. Walk to Times Square via Macy’s and Maddison Square Gardens. Group meal at Planet Hollywood then off to the Empire State Building. We also managed to squeeze in the ‘Skyride’, a helicopter simulator experience flying over New York. This helped all identify landmarks once we arrived at the 80th floor viewing tower. Most were blown away by the views at the top, many didn’t want to leave and some even said they wanted to camp there! We finally left the top at quarter to one to return to the hotel.

Wed – transfer day and New York night experience

All were in breakfast for 7am though more than usual needed a wake up call. Bags loaded onto the coach and then Kim, Alice, Deana, Alex, Nadine, Greg, George, Luke, Mr H and Mrs B took the last opportunity to climb the viewing tower to see the famous Indian Head rock and surrounding region. Coach departed just before 8:30am, all settled back for the first DVD ‘Mr Deeds’ to while away the journey to New York. Check in ETA at the Comfort Inn is 4:30pm, shortly followed by a walk to the electric Times Square for dinner at Planet Hollywood.

There is currently Skype opportunities for all from 3-7pm UK time as the coach has wifi.

Great journey down to NYC, eta is just 30mins time at 3:30 local time. All excited about walking and shopping the streets of New York. Photo of students on bus 30mins and their view.

Tues – slopes day 5

Final day on the slopes and all groups made the most of the excellent conditions. Progress by all has been helped by the excellent instructors and great weather which has meant maximum slope time. All skied the North Peak side today, and have made it to the 3000ft Summit Peak at some point during the week. Personal goals have been achieved by all and exceeded by most. The group has really bonded as a team and individuals have shown increased resilience as the trip has progressed. The odd bump and ‘butt’ bruise Is now brushed aside as a positive have a go attitude prevails. Notable mentions for individuals progress today go to Luke, Alix, Alex, Danielle, Stephen, Sally and Chamina.
Most were disappointed to leave the slopes and resort but the excitement is building for New York. This time tomorrow we will all be up the Empire State Building.

Mon – slopes day 4

It really truly was sunny most of today yet again. Although not a summer trip most students are developing a heathy tan albeit with the the skiers ‘panda eyes’.

All groups successfully skied the North peak side. The beginners were rightly proud of conquering the Little Sister chair lift and slope and progressed onto the Lower Bear Claw run. Speed demon Kowalski supported by George, Danielle, Kim, Alix, Alex had an awesome day. The expert group of Taz, Danny, Ollie G, Ben C, Luke, Lewis, Aiden, Liam and Richard had a new instructor called Mick who proved to be ‘Awesome’ in the words of the students. The boarders are buzzing with Olly’s manuals and switch riding. Definitely the best day on the slopes so far.

Evening ents was a trip to the Tilton Outlet Mall where the students systematically bought up Vans, baseball caps and anything with the DC label on. It was rated as “the best shopping trip ever!” by Danny.

Sun – slopes day 3

It was yet another sunny morning, most welcome for a birthday breakfast for Alix with cards and helium balloons from all. All were keen to head for the slopes and were on the bus way before our 9:15 departure. Todays focus is on the middle ski group of Aiden, Liam, Stephen, Chamina, Sam Lane, Alice, Deana, Dana, Lauren and Sam Vale. All are making good progress and spent significant time on the runs leading off the fast 4 seater Seven Brothers chair lift. Aiden, Liam and Stephen are enjoying the speed and leading from the front whilst others like Alice and Chamina are preferring to focus on technique and style! Dana had a visit to the medical centre following a bump on the snow but she was immediately dismissed with the diagnosis of a ‘mild butt bruise’ which won her one of the daily trip awards of ‘drama queen’.

Tonights meal was commenced with a chorus of ‘happy birthday’ for Alix and the presentation of a large birthday cake which were all duly shared. This evenings ents was a trip to ‘Funspot’ where students enjoyed 3 floors of US style arcade games and came away with copious amount of crazy prizes. As this was an off site activity, Skype opportunities were limited last night. Indeed few students are taking the opportunity to Skype, we can see several parents online but the students are choosing to make the most of the hotel facilities during ‘free’ time. I have offered the use of the mobile phone for those that want to call home but only 2 students have wanted to do this. I think it is a case. Of “no news is good news!”

Photos to follow, the internet connection is proving a little temperamental tonight.

Sat – slopes day 2

Slightly cloudy start soon turned into another blue sky day. Knowing the routines, their was a slightly later breakfast before heading to the slopes. With the weather so great today all groups made it up to the ‘Loon Peak’ at 3000ft to experience the excellent views, with one group returned via the gondola. Lots of progress by all, and a few memorable wipeouts, notably Danny on the slopes, Max and Alex with a novel dismount from the chair and a comedy moment on the travelator from Mrs Burke.

Return to the hotel for a pool evening with outdoor pool and hot tub proving a hit.

Fri – 1st day on slopes

Blessed with overnight snow, the students ate a plentiful breakfast from the panorama restaurant before heading up to the slopes for the first time.

Conditions perfect, students were taken onto the Sarsaparilla slope for their first experience of the White stuff! Most were in awe of the difference in speed and ease compared to the dry slopes. All were making progress, and stories of emerging tall tales were shared over lunch.

Most were champing at the bit to get back on the slopes for the afternoon session. Beautiful
blue skies and sunshine continued to prevail.

Taz, Danny, Ollie, Richard, Alex Lane, Max, Lewis, Ben Churchill & Luke kept Miss Taylor company on the Summit Lodge side of the mountain, skiing down from the top of the gondola lift, over 3000 ft!

Our boarders made good progress with their instructor Yossi, turning with both feet strapped in and on both heel and toe edge.

The rest the group enjoyed perfect conditions honing their skills on the nursery slopes with the aim of progressing to the upper slopes tomorrow.

Meal time is proving popular with a wide variety of food on offer in a buffet style delivery. Evening ents was ice cream and a movie with an opportunity to see a local band but most students were tired after the first day on the slopes and almost all were asleep by before thr lights out deadline.

No major injuries to report other than a a little bit of dented bravado.
