At The Bishop of Winchester Academy we want to use our specialism to increase enjoyment, inspire and enthuse students in the Maths subject area and build the foundations for raising achievement.
Mathematics as a specialism of our Academy will enhance the learning across all areas and all ability ranges. Mathematical thinking is required by all members of society; for the 21st century mathematical thinking needs to become a habit of mind. To be successfully enterprising or innovative, a person will need to be at least mathematically competent. Positive participation in the in a modern world where access to information and knowledge will be essential, will require skills acquired from a mathematically rich curriculum.
Mathematics can be creative; it is an international language. It transcends cultural boundaries. Mathematics can inspire students to want to learn for the sake of wanting to learn; to solve a problem simply for the pleasure of wanting to solve that problem. Few subjects can claim the breadth of mathematics; a subject that can be rooted in all subjects. Within the context of a Christian school, Mathematics can inspire the awe and wonder to the bigger questions students want to ask.
The academy will develop links to showcase/teach mathematics to the community, to parents, adult learners, and primary children. We will forge further practical links with our partners in the financial and retail sectors. Students who are functional in mathematics will be financially functional. They will be able to think independently in applied and abstract ways; they will be able to reason and assess risk.
