Health and Social Care

"Students' behaviour is outstanding." (Ofsted July 2013)

Health and Social Care meets the needs of students who want to work in the Health, Social Care or Early Years sector.  It is also suitable for those who wish to study and learn more about their own health and wellbeing.

Key Stage 4

BTEC First Award / Certificate in Health and Social Care

This course is vocational and therefore allows students to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the ‘Care’ sector.  It enables students to develop skills in team working, problem solving, presenting information effectively, working from a brief, project and self-management, independent learning skills and working to deadlines.  These are all skills valued by employers and are excellent transferrable interpersonal skills for whichever route you may choose to follow.  Although much of the work is delivered in the classroom there will be an element which is delivered outside of the classroom environment.

In this course students study;

    • Human Lifespan Development,
    • Health and Social Care Values
    • Effective Communication in Health and Social Care
    • The Impact of Nutrition on Health and Wellbeing

The course has 75% internal assessment and 25% external assessment.  The internal assessment will be via the collection of evidence to show that the learner has met the Unit learning aims.  The evidence for this may be generated in a variety of vocational ways such as: audio-visual recordings of portfolio, sketchbook, a working logbook, written reports, graphs, posters, projects, and time constrained practical assessments or presentations.
