TBOWA Celebrate Exam Results

Students at The Bishop of Winchester Academy have enjoyed a double success this summer. Parents and staff can be rightly proud that students have achieved the best results ever in both GCSEs and ‘A’ levels. This supports the great Ofsted report that the school received earlier this year which described TBOWA as ‘a school that changes lives.’ It has been a privilege to share the magic moments when students open their envelopes and shriek with delight that all their hard work has paid off and they have achieved a place at the 6th Form or are now moving on to University.

There is much to celebrate for the school, as whole community, and for every single student who worked relentlessly throughout the heat of May and June to get the grades they deserved. It is important to remember that behind every exam statistic there is an individual student who is shaping their future. All these individuals deserve to be recognised from the highest achievers to those who have overcome massive personal challenges to achieve their personal best.

This has been a huge year of change in the nature of exams and how they are assessed and reported. All will agree it is becoming increasingly harder to achieve the top grades. Despite this students at ‘The Bishop’ have performed outstandingly. The number achieving what the government are calling a ‘Standard’ pass in English and maths at grade 4 is 76% - this is a great result. The number achieving a ‘Good’ pass at grade 5 is an incredible 50%. Those achieving grade 4 in English is 83% and in maths is 82%. These grades along with the grades students achieved across a whole range of subjects means all students will be able to access the courses that they want either at ‘Bishop 6th Form’ or at another provider.

Amongst the individuals who achieved particularly well are the highest achieving boy.  Head boy, Josh Holes achieved a grade 9 in English Literature, 8 in English, 8 in maths along with 5 other ‘A’ grades and a Distinction*. Alex Sidney achieved a 9 in maths, 2 grade 8’s in English, 4 other ‘A’ grades and a Distinction*. Grace Barker was the highest achieving girl. We are very happy that all 3 students are continuing the academic studies in ‘Bishop 6th Form’ as they plan their route to University.

The ‘A’ level results have ensured that all students who wanted a place at University secured a place - 90% of students achieved grades that ensured they secured their first choice. The overall results for achieving the prestigious ‘A/B’ grades is well above the national average.

The highest achieving ‘A’ level student is Megan Ryder-Maki who achieved 3 grade ‘A’s in psychology, English literature and drama. Megan is thrilled to have achieved a place at the highly regarded Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts - a star in the making. Luke Benfield achieved AAB in maths, further maths and physics as well as an A in AS computing. Luke has gained place a Sussex University to study Pure Maths.

This has been an exceptional year at ‘The Bishop’. Ofsted gave us a glowing report that acknowledged how hard our staff work and the difference that this makes to young lives. We continue to be oversubscribed and the 6th Form goes from strength to strength. Now we have the results that recognise all the hard work and allows our students to continue with their learning on the courses of their choice.

We are very proud of all our students at ‘Bishop’ and all that they have achieved. Students have been a credit to their families and their school. Staff have supported students tirelessly and are rightly celebrating with students. We are grateful for the continued dedication of our governors and the support of the Diocese.
